Life insurance if you are HIV+
BLOG articles: Protection Insurance and HIV
Thanks to advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART), HIV is now considered a long term condition rather than the death sentence it once was.
In terms of life insurance, cover for HIV positive people has been slow to appear. Initially, only a few specialist providers offered cover, but it is now becoming more mainstream.
There is a premium loading to be paid, with strict conditions for cover. However, premium loadings exist for nearly all long term conditions, eg diabetes, so it is unsurprising that HIV is considered in the same way. What cover is available on what terms?
We can possibly help if you are looking for life cover up to a maximum term of 20 years for any cover amount. You must be aged 70 or below on application. It is not necessary to be on treatment, though premiums are more favourable if you are. You should have a consistently undetectable viral load. Other conditions apply, and premium loadings will depend on your specific circumstances.
If you would like to find out more or discuss if you are able to obtain cover then get in touch with us. All information is treated in strictest confidence.Consensus Statement
On 21 July 2016, the following Consensus Statement was issued by the Prevention Access Campaign and is now endorsed by 360 organisations in 48 countries.
People living with HIV on ART with an undetectable viral load in their blood have a negligible risk of sexual tranmission of HIV. Depending on the drugs employed it may take as long as six months for the viral load to become undetectable. Continued and reliable HIV suppression requires selection of appropriate agents and excellent adherence to treatment. HIV viral suppression should be monitored to assure both personal health and public health benefits.
